We can't wait to welcome lots of you to the gardens for our first open day this Sunday 26 April. Thank goodness we decided to have a late April open day as the gardens are EARLY and there is masses of colour already. There is more opening daily as we enjoy this lovely sunshine - ignoring the brisk northerly wind. Does anyone know the reason why this happens in Norfolk every April?! This Sunday is a great day to visit if you want to enjoy the gardens in peace and quiet before the busy events in May (the Stody Family Fun Day on Sunday 3 May and Classic vehicles at Stody Gardens on Sunday 17 May.) From 6 May onwards we open 1pm - 5pm every Weds to Friday - these will also be quieter days for garden-lovers and our herbaceous borders will be further ahead by then too. For this weekend, there are carpets of bluebells to enjoy, Lily of the Valley opening its sweetly scented buds, Solomon seal lining the camellia and Magnolia pathways and masses of bright azaleas to lift the spirits as well as larger dramatic rhododendrons. I love the garden right now when it's all newly opened and nothing has gone over yet. Introducing our fascinating 'Edgeworthia crysantha' which, coincidentally, we bought from nearby Edgefield Nurseries in February 2024. Now thriving in this sheltered spot by the back door, this highly-scented plant is closely related to Daphnes and is native to the woodlands in the Himalayas, much like many of our Rhododendrons. Its flowers appear in clusters on the tips of totally bare stems. It's an unusual look (!) but it more than makes up for it with its rich, deep honey scent which has drawn in the bees as you can see. Some of them are so drunk on it, they've been staying on the flowers overnight, rather like a floral park bench. #opengarden #norfolkgarden #unusualplants #bees #spring #scentedshrubs

The temperature gauge breached 10 degrees today and oh! The birdsong, the daffs, crocus and snowdrops and of course, Stody's camellias... only the first tentative openings, but it's happening. We're busy leaf blowing, pruning and preparing for our busy events this May - 18 open days in total including our Family Fun Day on Sunday 3 May with a new farming theme, and our Classic Vehicles at Stody Gardens on Sunday 17 May - no changes there bar more infrastructure so we can feed and entertain all you lovely people who pile into the gardens each year to enjoy hundreds of classics as well as music, food and drink in the gardens. Lots of quieter days too for everyone to enjoy the flowers in peace. It's still very muddy and very grey out there but the buds are growing day by day - Spring is on its way! Autumnal bounty in the orchard - another legacy of our glorious summer 2025. It has been a particularly fruitful year, thanks to the major remedial prune by Richard & the team of our apple and pear trees in February 2023... they had become very
Autumnal bounty in the orchard - another legacy of our glorious summer 2025. It has been a particularly fruitful year, thanks to the major remedial prune by Richard & the team of our apple and pear trees in February 2023... they had become very congested. It was hard work and looked brutal on the trees (autumn 2024 was pretty sparse in terms of fruit), but...this is the result a year later!💥🍎🍐. Also, so many plums this year. One bough was so heavy it just dropped off the tree... But what to do with it all? We have been enjoying plums cooked with honey, a bit of butter and a pinch of finely chopped rosemary - important to get the balance right, but if you do, it is delicious with creme fraiche 😋. Yesterday, we poached some pears with honey, cinnamon, orange peel and a pinch of all spice - sensational with vanilla ice cream. Quite a few mice are also enjoying the bounty - resulting in some frenetic (unsuccessful 😅) digging from the Labrador. We filled this basket in 15 mins on a blustery, warm autumnal day - a v happy excursion for all involved. #autumnbounty, #autumn, #orchard, #apples, #pears, #plums, #cooking #pruning

The Dawn Garden is now in its third year and we are just blown away but how much it has filled and matured since last year. Still lots to improve, some gaps that need filling and more dark plum red to add in... the white Rosa Iceberg has more than lived up to its reputation - what a rose! Its scent, bounty of flowers and length of flowering period too. The yew hedges hold the scent in so it's a lovely spot to sit down and while away a few minutes with a very cold drink in this incredible heat 🥵🥰 #whitegarden #herbaceousborder #gardendesign
